The number of finger joints on each hand (excluding the thumb) makes it possible to count to 12 by using the thumb.

Egyptians and Babylonians were fond of counting in base twelve like this and this is basically why we have 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour.

The Babylonians (and I think Summarians) used base 60. This allows the most whole number common denominators possible for the smallest base number for a counting system.

It's a radically different way of thinking about, well, everything.

Also, try to imagine doing geometry in base-60 and writing about it in cuneiform. 😱
