It looks like what I'm trying to do requires dumping a ton of load into heat in order to protect the load, when what I'm trying to protect is the source.

I suppose something analogous to pic related, a friction/slip clutch.

But thank you for your efforts. I'll spend a lot of time doing more research on this problem.
