Interesting. In chemistry there are things called stereo isomers which are mirror images of a molecule like dextrose. The right handed version is Dextrose which is sweet and metabolizable by humans and the left handed version, L-glucose is sweet but not digestible.

I wonder now if sub-atomic configurations of atoms could have the same effect: the "right handed" versions we can sense and the left handed we can't.
