You can search on twitter "coinbase down" to see that for at least two last cycles CB was down each and every time #bitcoin pumped. Last cycle there were a lot of speculations about their presumably shitty infrastructure and how it was possible with their profit levels. Obviously only people from inside know what was going or have an explanation, but it has never been leaked - at least I have not seen one.
