I'm constantly amazed at how much money American devs make. That's CEO salary, in Germany.

German devs, by comparison.

But you can't directly compare European salaries to USA salaries in any meaningful way.... cost of living on America's coasts are so much higher. And there is no free healthcare. Right?

There is Medicaid and Medicare, and employee plans.

Individual Germans are quite poor, even for European standards.

But, I'd argue that our quality of life is higher, on average. You need to be upper-class, in America, to live like a middle-class or higher working-class German.

But isn’t it true that cost of living is much higher there? My friend who lived there for many years used to refer to the US as the richest third-world country, mainly because even though he made about much more on the same position than home (and here it is quite lucrative position), he constantly struggled to make ends meet. Back here, he lives very comfortable life on about a third of his US salary.

It is obvious on subscription prices, you can pile multiple $6/month in the US without problems, but here it gets prohibitive very fast.

Most of the USA is cheaper, but nobody seems to want to live there. Everyone crowds into a few big cities and then pays ridiculous real estate prices and private school, etc.

In Bavaria, we live in a village, and have access to city infrastructure, because of the way everyone is spread out across the region.

Okay, that makes sense. Here, in CZ village it’s similar, there are no really remote places. It does not take much effort to live almost anywhere here. I guess in larger countries it would be very different.
