Seems like just using the electric and hardware costs to buy Bitcoin is better used than what an old miner will get you.

Probably, but buying bitcoin won't secure the network that which your money derives its value from.
I just run a full node and lightening node I'm not too worried about one S9 preventing a 51% attack.
Aye and you're not necessarily wrong there. But I do have to say, I've got a greater understanding and appreciation of the system as a whole by doing and learning abt this aspect of bitcoin.
Plus, I'm a hardware nerd. So there's that.
