Assange is NOT a whistleblower. He is a journalist who published Leaks from whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning e.g.

Assange had no need to „steal“ information. BTW Manning had no need to steal information too. She had access to the data on a daily work basis.

Of course she did sign a contract and to give data to a 3rd party is illegal, but on my opinion whistleblowers must not face punishment when their leaks demonstrate crimes against humanity and wrongdoing of governments.

Manning had a security clearance and he committed treason by taking documents off of SIPRnet and giving them to somebody without a security clearance.

That‘s true, but if leaks show violations of humanrights and war crimes?

I‘m definitely not in favor of leaking all and every classified document but on my opinion legislation needs exceptions for Whistleblowers who reveal breaches of Humanrights as declared by the UN.

I'm not speaking for or against, just stating the legal facts as they are. I used to hold a security clearance. Manning got off very light for what he did.
