The biggest issue is how much power is in one, ad revenue dirtied, hand. If one day they decide to push something unpalatable to chromium they will undoubtedly change the whole landscape. If chromium changes a hard to change api, all other browsers will mostly fall in line.

Also, safari. The joys of oligopoly.

They are very different things and I feel we should acknowledge that.

For example, I think EVERYONE on the web would love it if WebKit actually supported more web standards. The goal here is to get MORE redering engines not to create a monoculture. That's actually in Google's best interests

How do you think a monoculture is bad for Google's interests? Wouldn't they want to dominate the market to ensure their lifeblood ad revenue keeps flowing?
