As a golf coach at a small school, I coach laying up. Hitting driver costs a few player more strokes than one extra shot to make the green.
I agree being in play is #1
Speaking personally, I’ve hit a lot of irons/woods off the tee that did not find the fairway.
Finding the right combo of accuracy/distance/confidence and getting yourself in play is the key.
