The smaller the better. An inflatable boat within a small bracelet would be perfect.

Sometimes I see people swimming with a surfboard in tow (but more commonly they swim on top of the surfboard). Most surfboards accomodate a leash, but note that it fastens at the back of the board and around your ankle.
