I have noticed one thing: when it happens to me (3-4 times) then also my follower count drops a bit, then most come back relatively soon, maybe a few hours.

Me too ! Some clients drop my followers/followings count :/

When it happens with followers it’s not your own account but theirs, so logically it has to happen to a lot of users at random times, but the same time more or less
