I could reply with something horrible on here, and you could mute me so you wouldn't see it. But everyone else would still see it, because it's my note that just happens to reference your note. You have no control over it. Everyone's clients are requesting from relays any notes that reference your note ID so that they can load the comments.

It's possible one or several clients may introduce a feature where you can 'block' a reply and the client apps won't load that reply for every other user, but not all clients will do this, and actually I think it's doubtful that any of them will.

This is social media anarchy. We don't have to accept or promote harmful content on here, but we might have to learn how to coexist with it.

Anarchy doesn’t have any longevity unless there is a culture of personal responsibility and cultural norms.

I can mute a few users but if it was at a massive scale like 100k mutes a day, it would be unusable for most.

If the solution is to tell public figures that Nostr is usable but only if you are anon, so be it. That could be one solution.

Nostr allows for the freedom. I’m interested in the conversations surrounding how to protect the freedom now that I have it for myself and others.

If there are no police and content moderation teams (which I’m pretty ok with that’s why I’m here) then I’m willing to take personal responsibility to finding solutions even if it requires being slightly uncomfortable while finding them. It’s kind of fun thinking outside of the corporate tech box!

I’d personally like to see this work. It would be nice to show that social media can work without a boot on the throat. 😂

I think the pattern that will maximise freedom and allow users to filter out content they don’t want is by subscribing to ban lists.

Some folks would do the work of listing all the npubs that they deem as “known sources of spam/violent content/porn/CP/etc” and we pay some small amount as a user to subscribe to the ban lists we want to filter out feed

They do the work (manually and/or with algorithms) to make the ban list and we can subscribe to it.

There may eventually be many providers that use different standards to determine what npubs get into the ban list, how long an npub stays on the list, etc. that way there is competition and choice for users.

I’d imagine clients would suggest the ban list providers they are working best. And relays may even use the same to reject events submitted by known sources of content the relay provider doesn’t want to host.

I think this could be the foundation of a freedom maximising way to make Nostr safer.

This is one option that was discussed early on.

I think that all options should be explored NOW.

I can’t say that fast enough or loud enough. It’s annoying and a bummer I get it. I want to have a party where I celebrate and posts cats and memes too but there will be no one around to celebrate with besides bad actors if the most pressing issues aren’t addressed. Illegal content should be first to address on the list always. Outside of the box thinking and aggressive solutions will be required.

Let’s put it this way, if I’m here and if I’m talking about it…. There are thousands if not more trying to figure out how to best exploit this system for nefarious purposes.

I’m not in tech or I’d be building my damn self right now. 😂

Nostr is an opportunity to show how it can be done correctly. I can personally walk at anytime. I have no skin in the game and will lose nothing by walking.

That’s fine but I feel a deep sense of responsibility to protect the space not for myself but for those who need to speak freely globally currently and in the future.

Tossing my hands up and saying “can’t do anything about it.” would be lazy. I think that anyone who does that is larping that they want freedom because they are unwilling to do anything to protect it.

I’m grateful that you folks are interested in the conversation. That gives me hope. 💜

Absolutely. You’re not being annoying. It’s something that’s important to reckon with and it’ll smack us all in the face at one point or another. So it’s best to plan now.

I’ve been finishing up some stuff on my https://relay.guide project to discover relays. And I hope to work on something like consent-based content moderation plugins for relays next.

That would work well with the relay guide so we can label relays by their content moderation strategy (none, only what’s legally mandated, aggressive, etc) so users can choose what environment they want to live in.

As time goes one I think people will sort themselves out and relay operators will be incentivised to use some passive content moderation strategy (by outsourcing it to a ban lost provider) in order to keep operating.

Anyway I’ll be taking a pass at this because it matters a lot to me.
