We do a lot of research in emergency medicine. The issue isn't looking stuff up. It's having a basic understanding of many concepts that allow us to determine which information is relevant for a problem. A lot of experience and time goes into becoming good at digging through it all.
Sounds like it works similar to programming

Research is the mechanical process of it; discernment is the necessary skill.
