A glimpse of life in China, even before the facial recognition cameras everywhere, and of the lives of those not doing things the government's way.
You'll love it more if you're into Jesus. But even if not, it's a powerful book. A novel, based on reality. The kind that becomes part of you.

Live Not By Lies by Rod Dreher is excellent. Nonfiction. I haven't finished it yet.
When I want a break from the messy, twisted world, sometimes I pick up an old George MacDonald novel. They're pure and refreshing - the good characters are genuinely delightful, the bad ones are easily identified, and the stories resolve.
Or biographies - lots of those.
