Do they? It seems anyone can register any username, you just have to pay. "Hodlonaut" is still available on any of the other 4 domains they offer.
Discussion
“Available” yes, but only claimable by me
How do you claim it?
The nostr verification is essentially linking your pubkey to a site that either verifies your identity somewhat (you control both the pubkey and Twitter) or doxxs you at least partially (by linking your pubkey to a site you control-like a GitHub pages. Is that a decent understanding of the NIP?
#[9]
I don't fully agree. A nip-05 identity is like an email address. It allows people to look up your npub based on a username@domain.nl identifier. That's its primary purpose.
I don't think nostrplebs is doing any sort of verification? I can't find any evidence for them doing that. Perhaps #[8] was referring to the initial signup where people could contact Derek on Twitter to be able to register an early account? But it seems that at least today anyone can register any username on nostrplebs.com.
Not saying that hodlonaut isn't truly hodlonaut, it's just that in my opinion being nostrplebs "verified" doesn't prove that he is 🙂. The best proof of identity would be the person giving their npub on a site (such as Twitter, although in this case hodlonaut hid/removed his account there) where you know it's them.
That is interesting. Are you saying the inclusion at some site @domain doesn’t do any real verification? If so, then it would seem that self verification via one’s own site (like GitHub pages) might be of better quality-especially if the GitHub account is well known.
Well, I'm not outright saying that. What I am saying is it doesn't really matter from the point of view from nostr itself - a nostr client just checks whether the nip-05 identity you put in your profile actually points back to your profile, and if it does, it calls you "verified". Nothing else.
Whether you as a person put more weight on a nostrplebs.com identity than on a "free-nostr-identities-for-all.com" identity is purely a social construct.
I'd like to point out though that there are now two people in this thread saying nostrplebs.com do verify account and there's a possiblity I'm wrong. I've reached out to Derek on Twitter on their procedure, because I'm geuinely interested and'll happily admit when I'm mistaken 🙂.
I admit i can't level or pace of your knowledge regarding these things, and most of the times i am lost of words to say things i want to say or how i must respond..but from what i understand from what you just said that is that my nostr pubkeys are related to or most of my social media accounts?
It isn’t so much that the pubkey is linked to a social media account, but instead the pubkey key is linked to a user-friendly name-somewhat related to the format of a name@domain. Here the name is the user friendly aspect and the domain is what verified the link between the user friendly name and the pubkey. There is a nostr NIP compliant file at the domain containing the link between the user friendly name and the pubkey. Before sites will include your name pubkey combo on their domain, they want some verification who controls the pubkey. This is often done by posting your pub key on Twitter, presumably doing so shows you control both. If you do the name/pubkey link on you own site-one can see who controls that site. I think this is an accurate description. Definitely interested in someone has a better characterization.
Anyone can run a 5$ domain and attest millions of pubs to names, why would and should they care about verifying anything?
Yes. I think that means there will someday be a quality to the verification. That is name@goodQualityVerification.com will be more meaningful and desirable than name@noRealVerification.com. Kind of like a Good Housekeeping seal.
Yeah, but that's why i 😎for my usecase of social always want to prefer one from wedontcareaboutIDandchargenothing.com.
If ppl get used to not want to see anon posts, that would be a sad outcome. Imho
Yes. With nostr it seems the default is annon and if you want to doxx yourself you can. Annon is essential. Being verified has a legitimate use case.
Thank you for making it more difficult and confusing...This is not helping. How do you expect you can beating Twitter with such explanations?
U must be dreaming of an other net, there is no verification, anyone can use any 05 name in nostr, just dns sites responding, for a name with a pub, only ur pub is uniqe. The only thing a nip05 attests, is that a domain has a pub that match a name, the name itself is unprotecable from double assingment ro many pubs
It’s clearly you. What more do people want? Birth certificate + DNA samples?
So anyone can just register others' username?
Yes anyone could register the same username, but they wouldn’t get a purple checkmark. You could register it and get a grey checkmark, or if you don’t register no checkmark like me if you have commitment issues. Lol
It’s a bit confusing, I admit.
But for #[7] it doesn’t matter because “we are all hodlonaut”. 😝
You are all hodlonaut...i am NOT!
