My guess is there are probably systemic quality control issues at Boeing, and have always been there, but the media is just now catching on that reporting about it non-stop is going to get a lot of views.

Not exactly. Boeing has always been a quality company. But in 1997 they merged with a ācost-cuttingā company, McDonald-Douglas, which had a history of poor quality control. Well, as so often happens, ācost-cuttingā wins out and the quality of Boeing has fallen dramatically. #enshittification reigns again.
