A bold statement. I say before next week. Who knows🤷?!
Discussion
No one knows, but it’s provocative, gets the people going!
It does, yes! But, I do want to say one thing: were starting to see way too many shitcoiners on nostr. They're polluting our ecosystem.
The beauty of an open protocol.
I don't agree with that. There's nothing beautiful about it, if it promotes scam coins🙄!
Nostr itself isn't promoting scam coins any more than Bitcoin is promoting buying drugs online. Bitcoin just exists and people can permissionlessly use it for whatever they want, including things other users don't like. Nostr is the same.
People can promote whatever the heck they want on Nostr and there's nothing anyone else can do about it. That's kind of the point. And yes, that is the beauty of Nostr as an open protocol. It is entirely agnostic to how it is being used, as well it should be.
I don't agree with that. Bitcoin does promote an open market for all but it's principles don't support scam currencies. That's why I believe it's important to do our best to keep scammers and shitcoiners away from the protocol.
How exactly do you propose to stop them? Relay-level censorship?
Where does it stop? Can't post any mainstream "fiat" media?
Can't post any opinions that are outside the pale? Kick all the racists and Nazis off of #Nostr somehow?
No. This is an open protocol. Not only shouldn't we do any of the above, but it is literally impossible to do so without making Nostr centralized and everything we hate about the legacy social media platforms.
YOU are the only person who can curate your feed. Use WoT relays if you are so bothered by spammy shitcoin shills. There are things you can do to make sure you don't see them.
I vehemently oppose shitcoins, but I will defend the ability for who-counters to use Nostr to promote their scams, because freedom of speech is meaningless if it's only freedom for everyone and everything you don't hate.
That's true. We'll, then give me some advice. Amethyst is literally my first time ever using social media help me out. I'm here to learn. I've explained this multiple times in older comments. I don't want to use Primal, though.
Then you are in luck, #Amethyst has pretty robust features for curating your timeline.
First off, get your relays sorted out. The main dev for Amethyst, nostr:nprofile1qythwumn8ghj7anfw3hhytnwdaehgu339e3k7mf0qyghwumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnhd9hx2tcppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qqsyvrp9u6p0mfur9dfdru3d853tx9mdjuhkphxuxgfwmryja7zsvhqkdr6hs wrote the de facto guide for setting up your relays here:

The relays you are reading from and that you have set as your inbox and general relays in particular will have a massive effect on how much unwanted spam you see.
If you primarily read from web-of-trust(WoT) relays, you will almost never see spam, because spammers generally don't make it into anyone's web of trust. Here's a list of some popular web-of-trust relays:

Digging into optimizing your relays is a rabbit-hole all its own, but one worth going down. It will really help you wrap your mind around how Nostr works.
A handy feature under your General Relays is the ability to only use a relay for certain feeds within Amethyst.

Notice in the screenshot above, I have almost ALL feeds turned off for wss://relay.mostr.pub, which is a relay that bridges content from Mastodon over to Nostr. All I have active is my home feed. This is because I want to see the things my followers share from this relay, and I want to see any Mastodon users I have specifically followed, but I don't want to see everything that is posted to Mastodon in my Global feed, etc.
On the other hand, I am quite happy to see notes that have been posted to wss://wot.brightbolt.net in all of my feeds, because this is my own WoT relay, so only those who I follow, and those they follow can post to it.
The next place to go is your Security Filter settings. By default, Amethyst will have security filters turned on. This does two things: 1. Notes from those who have been reported by a few of the people you follow will show a warning that you must manually bypass in order to see the note. 2. Anyone who is posting the same or very similar note repeatedly and who you are not following will be hidden as a spammer.
You can see who you have manually muted here and who Amethyst is currently considering a spammer based on the above criteria, but the major feature I want to draw your attention to here is the Hidden Words tab. Here you can add certain words that you NEVER want to see any notes containing that word. The word filtered in the screenshot below has been particularly helpful to me. 😉

That should give you plenty to start with, and I hope it helps you take control of your own #Nostr experience.
Thanks! I'm still not 100% sold on the WoT concept, tbh. I've discussed this with previous users before. But, I did not know about the Hidden Word feature. Thank you for that🫡! That should be a big help!
Also, if you are using primal, do my edits show up?
I mainly use Amethyst on mobile, so your edits show up there. Primal will not show your edits. I don't know of any client other than Amethyst that allows for editing and displaying edits.
