I like WoT relays in theory, but I worry that legit new folks will have an even harder time gaining initial traction if none of us ever see their notes because we only ever see people who are within our WoT.

We have NIP-13 for that. A WoT relay that also accepts NIP-13 solves the problem of newbies. they just need to spend some CPU time until they get traction. (A shame not all clients implement NIP-13).

I'm currently working on a version of the WoT relay that also accepts NIP-13 users out of you Web of trust. (still not ready to merge with the original WoT, but you can try it from https://github.com/girino/wot-relay )
