I’m not trying to be a clown, how far back are we talking? I want to answer what you are asking.

The angel that spoke to Mary?

God speaking to Moses?

God and Adam?

I'm just talking about the early church. they didn't have Jesus around or their own scriptures, so how did they govern themselves?

Kind of a long answer for that one.
