After ending the crisis of the third century, reforming the Empires coinage system, creating the Tetrarchy power division, and several successful military campaigns the Emperor Diocletian also holds the distinction of being the first emperor to abdicate the throne voluntarily as illnesses began to take hold. Retiring to his hobby of gardening in his palace in Salona (modern-day Split, Croatia) he was beseeched many times to reclaim his throne as the Tetrarchy fell apart under ambitious successors, most notably Constantine the Great. His reply: "If you could show the cabbage that I planted with my own hands to your Emperor, he definitely wouldn't dare suggest that I replace the peace and happiness of this place with the storms of a never-satisfied greed".
