I guess first we need to see reality: majority of the EU officials wants to introduce this regulation. European Parliament is against of it. We still can do change and express our position.

Leaving EU is not a solution.

Danish Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard said encrypted services and social media - naming Telegram and TikTok - were widely used to facilitate crime and that if it was up to him alone, some communication platforms would be geoblocked and shut down. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/sweden-denmark-pressure-tech-platforms-over-gang-crime-ads-2024-08-21/

And it is just one example. Sweden, France, Hungary, Spain and other the same. Because citizens of these countries think that someone should defend their rights without any efforts. It doesn’t work like that.

Your rights will be easily taken, but not given. So help to involve as much people as possible to resist and stop this abusive regulation.

The EU will disolve itself quite naturally. The more stringent the controls the more pressure will be exerted on the individual nation states by their inhabitants. The edges might come apart first. Or maybe the Germans decide to come back to their senses.

I admire your vigor Lyudmila. But it is not possible to reform or vote oneself out of a tyranny.

A lot of people dream and literally dying to have even half of your privileges to exercise your rights. I remember their eyes and smiles, those who asked me to continue fighting and helping even if sometimes it seemed impossible. Some of them were released and building future. Some of them unfortunately became a history…

For sure it is your choice do it or just give up. 🧡

I didn't say anything about giving up 😉.

I tried to say that asking a tyrant for a little bit more freedom is not very productive. The tyrant cannot do differently than to incorporate ever more draconic laws. It is in his own interest to do so.

It is not a “little”. Freedom of communication is basic and the main freedom which is going be taken in case of silence. There are many processes of establishing rules which shape our reality. While we have this privileges we should use them. It is like have #bitcoin but don’t use or hold it. So who is responsible that for your decision to hold/use or not while you have this opportunity?

Silence means an agreement.

I'd say our freedoms are already taken and we have to win them back.

Government has already won and we are just waking up to the reality that no matter how well a constitution or bill of rights is written, it is still just a "piece of paper" and ultimately means nothing. Same is the case with any legislation. In the end it will be misused, mistreated and forgotten. No government can resist that.

I am also not silent. I try to point out the ridiculousness of democracy and other types of collectivism any chance I get. I would also go further and say that trying to change legislation by further legislation or political activism actually means that one agrees with, and participates in the current system of government.

I never consented with any system of government nor do I participate in it. I know I cannot vote myself out of it.

The only way out is building alternative systems and solutions.

That is what #Bitcoin is. That is also what #Nostr is.

Building systems outside of the influence of politics is the only way out of this.

I think both approaches (building new systems and fighting from within the current system) have merit and should be pursued. While I agree the current system is dysfunctional and we need to build new ones, we also can’t totally ignore it. I mean you can but it won’t ignore you.

And you do a parallel with #Bitcoin and #Nostr which are great tools for a new system but if we’re being honest, there are not near ready to replace the tools of the current system. So again, fighting on both fronts is important and there is no benefit in opposing those two approaches.

You can build a parallel system, invent thanks to existing environment for that. You won’t be able to do so living in the authoritarian state.

That is why the EU is failing to produce anything new of value.

Secession is a reasonable option for many reasons. There is more accountability and competition at a decentralized, local level, and also perhaps less enforcement power. The current Danish minister is not permanent. The EU bureaucracy is a malignant tyranny, not worth being attached to.

It is very useful to learn that EU bureaucracy is built exactly by national EU government. It is their representatives and their responsibility, but same as they are changeable - if you participate in the voting and express your position. This “if” makes huge difference.

I support people fighting for our freedoms in the EU parlement and we need to keep fighting wherever decisions can be influenced but there is no doubt for me that that the EU is undermining European democracies.

Although this is also an issue with the media, people have no clue what’s going on in the EU and who to turn to for accountability. The EU also removes arbitrage against nation states. The EU parlement doesn’t have a lot of power but if I understand correctly they could block this regulation. The way the Commission is selected is anti-democratic. Leaving the EU doesn’t magically fix things but staying in is being doomed to a slow death.
