I think things have always been this way and both the republicans and democrats have the same larger goals, passing the football to each other further down the field to score on us.
With the internet present it’s become loud and in our faces, and supporters of either side defend the bad policies because they’re part of the team.
There is Left and no Right party, they’re both centrist right.
I think the risk of generalizing history as a static figure is that it erases the nature of conflict and struggle which is indicated by shifts in law & order. For example the Gilded Age gave us robber barons that rose to industrial age monopolies hoarding government contracts through monopolies before getting dropped by new antitrust laws regulating anticompetitive practices. Power got centralized into the hands of a few and then got divided by a government that expanded regulation to protect the free market. Today anticompetitive practices like Musk interfering in Verizon’s FAA contract mirror that centralization of power into private hands, and implied antitrust laws need to progress its language to meet Information Age needs so we can transition the hands holding power again.

Things are the same in the sense the elites vs the working class is on going.
The people that play the elites change, some working class make it and become part of the elite.
Things get worse over time for us.
