I have had a Proton Unlimited plan for a few years. I recently had to add an SSH tunnel to a proxy server for web traffic because some sites are making it more difficult for VPN users.

Is this because VPNs tend to use a single server to handle customer traffic? Tests for use of VPN seem to rely on open ports so perhaps separate ingress and egress servers would be an improvement that can be asked for.

From what I gather, it has more to do with VPNs that use OpenVPN. I haven't dug into it to ferret-out the details. A lot of this seems to be happening with sites that use CloudFlare as a content delivery network.
