Who’s going to open a channel to a brand-new node without any other connection? You’d have to pay for that, and that’s the whole point: no non-tech person is going to bother with such cumbersome work.

Yo, you are the one who said "you can't" and you absolutely can. I have opened plenty of channels that I expect to have repeat payments to and paid nodes using lightning (because I don't want to pay fees for weekly payments (for services rendered).
I literally help people set these things up for a living. Each time they go "it's that easy?" And I say "Yep."
It's not installing an OS from commandline like Gentoo linux. It's literally installing an app on your phone and using it. This "it's too hard" crap is garbage.
