while we're all talking about Bitcoin Core Relay settings, can we fight about drop the default fee from 1 sat/vbtye to something like 0.1 sat/vbyte?

Its probably a DoS protection so only txns with non-negligible fees are validated, but that was likely set way back when 1 sat/vbtye was literally nothing.

A free market of fees would often have fees dip below 1 sat/vbyte when mempools are close to clearing if not for the paternal relay policies.

Why pay 1 sat/vbtye when 0.5 sat/vbtye do trick?

Didn't it originally have zero fee requirement?

Yeah I just remember reading about it but wasn't 100%. Way to verify

yeah same here - glad I checked though. It probably kicked in when blocks started filling a few years in.

I just had to spot check a few block heights and it actually too a ways out before there weren't like 100 empty blocks in a row

Tried a quick google to find conversation about zero fee but couldn't surface it. Oh well
