"Being unable to trust anyone makes the story compelling."

Alias Grace is a historical fiction novel by acclaimed Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Published in 1996, the novel is based on the true story of the notorious 1843 murders of Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery in Upper Canada.

The story follows Grace Marks, a young Irish immigrant who was convicted, along with a stable hand named James McDermott, of the double murder. The novel explores Grace's life and the events leading up to the crime through a series of flashbacks and interviews conducted by a young doctor named Simon Jordan, who is trying to uncover the truth about Grace's involvement.

As Grace recounts her story, the novel delves into themes of class, gender, and the nature of truth and memory. Grace's soft-spoken demeanor and apparent humility lead some to believe in her innocence, while others are convinced of her guilt. The doctor's attempts to unlock Grace's memories and understand her motivations drive the narrative forward, creating a captivating and unsettling psychological mystery.
