But look what was in central Europe before. Nacism. And before that? Austro-Hungarrian empire. The most of backwards of all the European monarchies.
In practical terms people many centuries under some form of feudalism.

things are still better, in a lot of ways, especially for eastern and central europe, everything up to czech/slovak/hungary/poland/slovenia this boundary is basically where europe gets better
