To be fair...
I was here long before Twitter was here. There were already a lot of people doing that on the internet before they showed up, they just did it on blogs mainly, and sites setup to look "official" in whatever way.
The algorithms are like alcohol on the human psyche - they don't create any behavior for which there was not a preexisting tendency in the humans they're being used on.
They just amplify whatever the owners set them to amplify.
