Can anyone point me to a good article on lightning? I've grasped that lightning is layer 2 which meams that there's no onchain activity until a channel is closed.

But I have no idea what it takes to run a node, what pitfalls might be involved with doing so and if it is at all possible to do for someone who isn't very tech savvy?

Super easy with Umbrel.

With Umbrel, with start9, possibly with other options as well. But I still lack the basic understanding of what kind of maintenance is required, which threats to privacy do I maybe expose myself to, jow do I backup channels, what would a good channel capacity be... and probably many more questions that I'm not even able to phrase right now...

Best way to learn is to just do it. Umbrel has a vibrant community with others asking the sane questions. However, umbrel has automated backups. Everything is over tor (unless you choose to open certain ports).

It becomes as easy as booting up your computer to have everything running.
