QR codes are like barcodes, where instead of various black and white bars, there is a grid of little white or black squares.
The three corners are used to determine the edges of the QR box and define the grid area so the color of each little square can be read.
A color based barcode would be difficult to implement because colors are not always reproducible, but a contrasting light and dark pair can.
