What are the tradeoffs to having tons of relays? Is there an optimal amount that yaโ€™ll have?

Uses tons of data. Havenโ€™t figured the โ€œoptimalโ€ setting yet because you donโ€™t know how each relay is performing

Agreed. Would love some extra information on relays if anyone can share. What are the benefits of running a personal relay on Umbrel? Is it possible for anyone else to use it?

The less the better.. make sure you get some paid ones

My personal experience has been larger data use and battery use with more relays. I've heard 12 is a nice spot but I think the important thing is to use relays your peers are on.

Too many and your client is going to use too much resources. Iโ€™m finding one public, filtered out of global, and several privates is a good mix.

I run 14 relays all popping lol ๐Ÿ˜† mostly paid ones..

Having paid relays is how you find people as well that you don't follow like new followers. You wanna follow because if they have that relay and you have that relay you will see it

Another tactic you might find useful is also add the filtered relay on Nostr.wine. It will push your notes to many public relays and fetch notes/profiles from public relays of people you follow. Itโ€™s kinda the best of all worlds right now.

The more you have the more data you use, but as adoption increased having 3-5 gave me a glitchy user experience. Upped it and Iโ€™m good. Trade offs.

At one point I saw someone mention having to many is actually not good and to aim for around 10 solid ones. But this thinking may have changed and if you use paid relays or not.
