A few things that I've found helpful. I'm no expert but this has made the experience enjoyable:

1) look up hashtags that might interest you.

2a) follow people using those hashtags, reply, repost, zap them

2b) use the hashtags so likeminded people find you

3) default to the notes + reply view to get exposure to people with another degree of separation
