I remember the first C++ compilers. Great times...not.

They compiled to C, so one could inspect and figure out if it was the C++ compiler that had done the wrong thing or if the problem was that they used untested C constructs and the C compiler fucked up.

A single simple "unexpected behavior" could take a day to figure out after the location had been identified. Me? C++? C?
