I think "doing something for the greater good" is a very noble act. I myself get a great feeling of reward from helping someone out with whatever it is they're trying to do. I feel closest to the people that have helped me throughout my life, either voluntarily or because i asked.
Where things go haywire is the point where people start demanding this from others. The worst case of this is when this is done by law. People get upset that the fruit of their hard labor is being given to people that are in an opposite position. It's never about them not wanting to help people that are maybe in a slightly worse position, but always being forced to help when maybe they don't want to. This creates enormous amounts of friction and makes everybody lazy because nobody wants to work just so that others may profit from it.
Helping is great, being forced to help does not help anybody in the end.
