women aren't very self-directed, so I wonder if a lot of girls have nothing going on because they haven't been introduced to much by other people

once upon a time there was a whole pack of skills a girl would learn because they were important for her future. now, just go to school and get a job and you don't have to know how to do anything else, just pay someone to do it for you
