ust isn't a better way than state channels, and they allow even deferring the increasing of precision of bitcoin for more or less indefinitely... but i'm sure you also understand well the difficulties of a sender-routed network protocol...

if a change in bitcoin made it possible to create a trustless path routing protocol without creating other problems that would be amazing, but the best i envision for now is paths that resemble actual lightning... (it's been a while since i dug into what the state of the art is though, almost 2 years)
