Was there even money in 1984? I somehow imagine the citizens just received food coupons or something. That is functionally equivalent to a CBDC.

This was wrong. I found my copy and flipped through a bit, saw a mention of cents 😂
That's why I'm speculating it didn't even ! Pure money (even fiat) always gives autonomy to the individual.
