i am taking a yearly soil sample. I will admit I am mineral guy first. I believe mineral balancing in soils to a certain degree is of foremost importantce for growing nutrient dense produce. if the minerals are not in soil they will not be in the plants. However, I somewhat agree with the biology (only), camp, the regeneratives, that a healthy soil food web ecosystem (the endaphon), is the be all end all. I guess like everything it comes down to location, if you happen to garden/farm in mineral rich soil, than the regenerative system will be all you need to do. but for most us there are going to be some glaring deficiencies, or sometimes worse excesses. the only way to know for certain is through a soil test. it's also a great way to catalog the changes from year to year. the first few years I found I had to add quite a lot of amendments now i mainly add only the sulfur elements that readily leach from the soil in my rainy climate.
