They do now in major cities but rural areas are slow to catch up. Japan has been historically a cash-driven society probably due to ease of use and understanding with an older population. But I’m speculating.

This intrigues me lol, I already heard about the subject from someone who traveled to Japan, different to say the least.
Japan has a large population of old people, many of whom have not even used internet and don’t even go to atms because they are unsure of how they work.
I believe you have a good point, older people are likely to be less engaged in technology. However, what surprises me is that Japan is at the same time one of the most technological countries, with many things being created in Japan. Finally, an interesting paradox.
