However, I forgot to mention another big problem: So many of the new Pokemon being such unviable garbage that Game Freak had to take the unprecedented step of redeeming the lines by giving a whole bunch of them evolutions in Gen 4.

If you eliminate early-route filler trash, starters, version exclusives, trade evolutions, unviable garbage missing their evolutions, legendaries and Kanto-locked Pokemon, you barely have any good new Pokemon to choose between when composing your team. No wonder fanboys cried over Gen 5 ONLY letting you use new Pokemon for the main game - Gen 2 had conditioned them into thinking that you NEED to fill your team with Old Pokemon, because so few worthwhile newcomers are available.
