β€œBut you can install apps on Android without the Play Store.”

Yes you can, and I wish that was an option on iPhone too. But the average person won’t click through warnings like this πŸ‘‡ The issue is not Android vs iPhone. The issue is not tech-savvy people being able to find a workaround. The issue is that Nostr and bitcoin need to be available to as many people as possible, and that includes having access to apps in both major mobile app stores.

Unless they can break the sandbox, sideloading these apps shouldn’t be dangerous. But then again, if you have bank apps on your iPhone, do you trust them enough to install something not vetted? Only takes 1 zero day exploits to ruin your day πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Yea, I’m not saying don’t do it. If you know what you’re doing you’ll be fine. Just saying that relying on the average user taking these steps is not a path to wider adoption. You and I, and 99% of everyone else currently using nostr, will be fine hacking around and making it work for what we need no matter what happens. But that means it all remains niche with little reach and growth in the user base.

I think I agree, I can't imagine my parents sideloading some spam and all of a sudden their entire life savings are gone. I want a reasonable Apple walled garden that is there for basic protection and privacy*. Of course, we can discuss the limits and test the rules, as is happening with Damus. And that's a healthy discussion, even if frustrating.

* Yes, I remember what happened with Apple and the Russian election app (Google was equally disappointing): https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/17/world/europe/russia-navalny-app-election.html#:~:text=MOSCOW%20β€”%20Apple%20and%20Google%20removed,on%20dissent%20around%20the%20world.

It worked for people that wanted to play Fortnite for a couple years before Google caved and changed their policies.

trash your spiphone. it is garbage.

buy only phones which you can unlock. unlock the bootloader and root. it is not even necessary to install a new operating system. sometimes the camera app is not as good as the original one. keep the one pre-installed and take control. delete and deactivate all google. find instructions for your phone here:

The average person will not use Nostr and Bitcoin. πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

Are you living on wonderland?

this is a one time thing on android. if this is too complicated or "tech savvy" to go into the options and enable it, then I dont know what to say, maybe take the person should join nostr and a make a post about it to get the answer like you just provided. With apple this is not even an option at all, despite the fact that it was once possible in the past. That is the difference.

this is like someone calling MS tech support and asking where the start menu is....

We can do that on iPhone with no jailbreak, I managed to do this in 10 minutes.
