This is why we need protocols and not platforms. There is no pressure to make money here. Just communicate like we all want.

Sometimes we just code for fun. I don't plan on charging anything for my client, nor do I have any money making ideas. I just want a client tailored to me, so I'm making it.
Yes thank you for that, I think that's great and a lot of amazing software gets built like that. I just mean its tough to sustain and get to the scale of something like discord that way. I hope that changes maybe with value for value, lowing friction of micro payments etc
It absolutely does for Discord, because they're a platform. Email does not have that problem. Centralizing around a massive data center costs a lot of money. Running your own email server or Bitcoin node or Nostr nice is mostly free.
solid relays and storage will cost someone $$$ no getting around that really even if clients all get built on donations
