"According to the Fathers, our first glimpse into understanding what hesychasm is can be found in the book of Genesis, where it is said that the Spirit of God 'hovered over the face of the waters.' Regarding this image in Genesis, Elder Zacharias has this to say: "The whole work of mental prayer is infinitely creative. Before the beginning of the world, the Spirit of God was hovering over the abyss, and at a given moment, there was an explosion from which all creation was hatched.' Our God is the Creator God, the God through whom everything that is, is. So we see that before we discover what God created, it is revealed how God creates. This image of God hovering over the water is one of dynamic stillness and divine solitude. What God creates is wondrous and how He creates is in and through hesychasm."
