Weeks before a billion Indians vote, political merchandise sales pick up

Political party merchandise and flag makers in India are expanding operations and working overtime to meet the surge in demand ahead of the two-month-long election with nearly a billion voters. Garment makers are temporarily converting factories into production hubs for election flags and banners. The textile hub in Surat, along with smaller hot spots like Mathura and Hyderabad, is the center of election merchandise. Political parties spend 30 billion to 50 billion rupees on election merchandise, creating as many as 10 million jobs. An opinion poll predicts an easy win for a Modi-backed coalition, while opposition politician Rahul Gandhi says the election is "much closer than being propagated."
