That sounds fun; and so much utility for the things which are irrelevant on global/national level.
I can see correlation between how centralized the "internet town squares" became and how contentious they are.
Big cultural conflicts are now silencing most of the debates and any space for nuance or the actual diversity.
it was heavily used on campuses so it was pretty fun and chaotic
