i lived for a little while in a war torn eastern european country, populated by predominately two cultures. i noticed in apartment buildings that i could tell which culture was the majority in the building by whether there were lightbulbs in the stairwells or not.

one culture would replace them when they burned out, the other would take the bulbs from the stairwell to use in their own apartments. i learned how real collective cultural differences are.
