Nostr is mostly not private today. Who promised you this?
Many apps nostr today (nip-4):
Public info who is DM-ing who. Content is private.
Twitter, bluesky, mastodon today: corporate/admin sees who you message, including the content of the message, and sells / lurks on this info.
Nostr tomorrow (nip-44, JMs etc): metadata is not leaked
i guess its selling point is more censorship resistance but i don't see how you can have that without privacy of messages
These are two different things.
Nostr is mostly used as a public network where you can post without asking for permission. Some relay operators may censor you, and some may not.
Private messaging is another challenge altogether. Galaxy brain devs are working on improving this. You may consider nostr:npub1exv22uulqnmlluszc4yk92jhs2e5ajcs6mu3t00a6avzjcalj9csm7d828 for private messaging outside the public nostr protocol.
but this doesn't really make sense to someone coming from another social media platform who would assume end-to-end encryption of messages on here (and nostr is literally being marketed as the alternative to these platforms). it does raise some very interesting questions about privacy in the public sphere.

Remember, there is no billion dollar company or massive VC investment in nostr yet. It’s 100s of construction sites where you can walk in, and even influence the builders on where to go next.
If you want a polished experience probably this is not it today.
