The kind of content that we're using right now are kind 1 messages, similar to tweets, with minimal formatting. You could make an extremely long note if you need to - and many people do, including me.

The blog posts or long form notes I mentioned are kind 30023, a designated spec to including much more formatting, allowing for better looking content. Not all clients show these in the same ways and specific clients have been created to showcase these.
