So do they have a separate book for everyone, or how does it work?

Many (most) court jurisdictions don’t require a book, opting to simply ask them if they swear to tell the truth.

It seems to be the case for political oaths as well. Many use some form of the bible, but other items/books have been used while some simply swear the oath with no item.
