People are literally telling me they don't want to be there but feel like they "need to" be (note: not for income or similar reasons) because others are still there. They say their waiting for [whatever alternative we're discussing] to "pick up."

But of course, nothing else will "pick up" if no one is brave enough to make a leap.

I've said it before: I recognize that I have a lot of privilege here. I am a full professor with tenure and have already established myself as the expert in my field. That place needs people like me more than I need it. I can take some time to try to be one of the ones who helps to build alternatives. I understand that not everyone is.
